'Blood of My Blood' Sangiovese 2024

A$39.99

Sangiovese is one of the most planted Italian varieties in Italy and Australia, is quite adaptable to its environment, and quite malleable in the winery, meaning you can get diversity of styles. My preference is for bold yet crunchy wines with some savoury texture, and I think Heathcote is ideal for this style. For the second vintage in a row Sangiovese was sourced from the GLKR Vineyard in Colbinabbin.

Fruit was hand harvested, de-stemmed and placed into open fermenters, with plunging of the cap performed twice per day. Alcoholic fermentation was complete after 12 days and skins were pressed for the wine to settle in tank. The majority of the wine was rested in 750L Slavonian oak barrels with the balance in French oak hogsheads for a total of ten months. The wine had an initial rack and return performed in Spring, then was bottled in March 2025.

The name 'Blood of My Blood' is in part a reference to the meaning of sangiovese (blood of Jupiter/Jove), and a reference to the popular novel and television series Game of Thrones (a Dothraki saying between a Khal and his blood riders). Credit for the name and the concept of the Vino Intrepido labels must go to the designer Brad Lucas, who also owns and operates Cult of the Vine, one of Melbourne's best wine bar/shops.

Jeni Port - Wine Companion
”Fruit from the GKLR vineyard. A fine and elegant sangiovese from a maker hitting his stride with the grape and the region. Classic spiced cherries, raspberry and plum meet earth, wild herbs and an extra dusting of peppery spice. The fruit delicacy, floral and herbal attractions of the scent combine on a palate that is nicely concentrated and dressed in sinewy tannins and varietal bright acidity. Hits an attractive sangiovese high note and keeps on going.” 93 points
