The Intrepid Wino Blog

Towards the end of 2011 I started this blog - giving myself the tongue-in-cheek moniker of The Intrepid Wino - to keep a journal of my world trip visiting wine regions over a sixteen month period. The idea was to write about my experiences and learnings for my own recollections, and also for friends and family to see what I was doing and where. Here you can read about the various regions I visited in Italy and the producers I visited that influenced me so much.

The Intrepid Wino YouTube Channel

The Intrepid Wino YouTube channel was for video content that I created. For a period of time I was recording tasting videos of wines that were mostly submitted by Australian wine producers and sharing my impressions. I also made videos about the experience of my first two vintages of Vino Intrepido, going from one tonne and one variety, to five tonnes and three varieties. Hopefully puts some more context around both my wines, and my approach to tasting and appreciating wines.

The Vincast Podcast

After returning from my aforementioned global wine trip, it was my intention to continue my wine communication in my own unique way. Something I felt was missing too often in wine media was talking about wine professional’s backgrounds and influences that impacted their involvement in the wine industry. The concept of The Vincast wine podcast was to have a very casual discussion with guests from the wine industry to find out how their journey has contributed to their philosophy and their involvement with wine.

Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show

Since 2001 the Alternative Varieties Wine Show (AAVWS) has been held in Mildura to champion grape varieties that are new and/or rare in Australia. Created by Bruce Chalmers, Stefano di Pieri and Dr. Rod Bonfiglio, initially it was a Sangiovese challenge, but evolved into one of the most respected wine shows in Australia. A panel of judges look at examples of wines from around the country and provide incredible insight onto quality, style and provenance that is extremely useful in benchmarking Australian wine.

Vinodiversity

This is the only website entirely dedicated to all of the alternative grape varieties that are grown in Australia. Darby Higgs has complied an extensive and detailed catalogue of all the rare and unusual grape varieties, the regions they are grown in, and the producers who make wine from these grapes. He has written multiple books and created maps that will assist you in discovering this exciting part of the Australian wine industry. A fantastic resource and worth checking out!
